Martin Moshal

Microgaming

1994, Durban, South Africa. Enter Martin Moshal. As a recently graduated Business Science student, Martin had the bright idea of creating an internet casino and was the first person to actually do it.

John Moshal

Martin created Microgaming and was a man on a mission. He had gained the necessary technical and business skills at university and had an inspirational father, John, a skilled engineer and accomplished businessman who had already his own successful electronics design company.

Roger Raatgever

Martin was a man that knew what he needed to do and how to get it done; not only technically but also organizationally. He planned for success by partnering with finance guru – Roger Raatgever. He helped Martin secure the funds he needed to fulfil his vision.

Roger became the CEO of Microgaming and the public face of the company. Martin maintained oversight of the company. Between them created they the legendary gaming software company it is today.

casino.co.za – the first online casino

You can still access this site thanks to oldweb.com (probably not on a smartphone)

Microgaming’s first website was called The Gaming Club. It was first released under the URL casino.co.za in 1994.

This was incredibly early. As a result the website was a pretty bare bones affair; it really only supported the downloadable games. Account registration and payments were handled manually. The action was limited to residents of South Africa.

In those days, the casino games were downloaded and installed on one’s PC. Developing the software to create a reasonably alluring and consistent animated gaming experience was no mean feat. To create basic animations on a PC screen a programmer needed  to use some low-level languages; ASM, C/C++ etc. There were only a few programmers that really knew what they were doing.

The potential was obvious but the South African jurisdiction was not ideal. The Gaming Club relocated to Antigua and Barbuda and continued as a Microgaming operator, Microgaming, itself, set up as a gaming software license provider in The Isle of Man.

Microgaming produced some basic games to start with. I found some Intertops branded games for you to admire and be dazzled.
